As of September 2023, UN Urges Swift Global Response to Spreading Ebola in DRC

    September 2, 2026

NEW YORK / RankWire.AI / – United Nations humanitarian chief Tom Fletcher has emphasized the need for immediate international intervention as the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo continues to grow across six provinces. In a statement to UN member states, Fletcher pointed out that the epidemic’s progression is faster than previous Ebola crises. He called on governments and donors to boost financial support and facilitate humanitarian access. This appeal follows the surge in infections, ongoing insecurity, and mounting strain on healthcare services in eastern and northern regions of the country.

UN urges faster global action as DRC Ebola outbreak spreads
DRC Ebola response expands as health authorities confront rising cases across six provinces.

The World Health Organization reported on September 1 that the outbreak had surpassed 6,000 confirmed cases, with nearly 3,000 fatalities. Currently, 60 health zones across Ituri, North Kivu, South Kivu, Haut-Uélé, Bas-Uélé, and Tshopo provinces are affected. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus described this as the second-largest Ebola epidemic ever and the most rapidly advancing outbreak recorded. Ituri remains the primary transmission hub, accounting for the majority of cases since the outbreak’s inception.

The epidemic involves the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola virus and was first detected in May 2026. WHO has classified the situation as a public health emergency of international concern. As of August 26, the organization reported 5,794 confirmed cases and 2,786 deaths in the DRC, with totals exceeding 6,000 shortly thereafter. Additionally, 1,293 recoveries had been documented by that date. Ongoing efforts by health officials include surveillance, contact tracing, laboratory testing, patient care, and community engagement in affected regions.

Conflict and fragile health infrastructure hinder Ebola containment

The Ebola crisis is unfolding amid a broader humanitarian emergency in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Fletcher highlighted that nearly 11 million people require aid due to conflict, displacement, food insecurity, and malnutrition. Violence in eastern DRC has limited access for health and aid workers, complicating response efforts. Since activating an emergency response mechanism on June 9, the United Nations has expanded its operations, establishing humanitarian hubs in Bunia and Beni to support fieldwork.

Medical personnel on the front lines face significant dangers, with Fletcher noting that more than 40 healthcare workers have lost their lives to Ebola. Attacks have also targeted treatment centers and ambulances. WHO data as of July 30 recorded 151 confirmed infections among healthcare and care workers, including 44 deaths. To improve safety, health agencies emphasize infection control, safe clinical procedures, and enhanced protection for responders. WHO has also indicated that unidentified transmission chains and deaths outside health facilities continue to challenge epidemic control efforts.

Funding increases and vaccine research efforts intensify amid rising case numbers

The updated 2026 Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan for the Democratic Republic of the Congo allocates $2.1 billion, with $300 million designated for Ebola-specific initiatives. Fletcher urged international partners to provide more flexible and increased funding both for the Ebola response and the broader humanitarian campaign. Meanwhile, WHO mentioned that a government-led six-month Ebola response plan needs $1.3 billion. The organization has called on member states to accelerate contributions to support expanded surveillance, treatment facilities, laboratory work, community outreach, and other critical public health activities.

On September 1, WHO issued revised guidance on vaccine deployment as scientists explore options against the Bundibugyo strain. The agency stated that current evidence does not conclusively show that the licensed Ervebo vaccine offers meaningful protection against this particular Ebola species in humans. Therefore, it recommends administering the vaccine only within research protocols while ongoing clinical trials produce additional data. WHO and Africa CDC continue supporting the Congolese government’s response efforts, which include identifying cases, halting transmission, and safeguarding communities across the six affected provinces.
