European Union Allocates €2.3 Million in Early 2026 to Enhance Africa’s Fight Against Cholera

    August 18, 2026

BRUSSELS, BELGIUM / RankWire.AI / – In early 2026, the European Commission announced an emergency humanitarian aid package totaling €2.3 million to combat cholera outbreaks across West and Central Africa. This support aims to assist Nigeria, Cameroon, the Central African Republic, and Chad. Officials clarified that the funds will be utilized for treatment, disease surveillance, access to clean water, and sanitation initiatives. The announcement arrives amid a rise in cholera cases throughout several African nations during 2026, with Nigeria experiencing a significant spike mainly in Borno State.

EU sends €2.3 million to strengthen Africa cholera response
EU emergency funding supports cholera response efforts across four African countries.

Nigeria is set to receive the largest portion of the emergency funds, totaling €1.5 million. This allocation will help expand intervention teams, supply cholera treatment kits, and distribute other critical resources. Additionally, it will fund improvements at public water points and household water supplies. Part of the aid will also be directed toward strengthening disease monitoring in remote areas. The program encompasses case management, risk communication, and community awareness campaigns to help contain the disease’s spread in affected regions.

According to the latest World Health Organization data, 90,049 cholera cases had been reported across 18 African countries up to June 28, with 1,528 fatalities. Nigeria recorded 26,848 cases and 181 deaths during that period, with June alone accounting for 19,887 new cases and 97 deaths. WHO reports that Borno State contributed to more than 95% of Nigeria’s cases in 2026, with Maiduguri, Jere, and Monguno among the most affected locations.

Funding Focuses on Treatment, Water, and Surveillance Efforts

The Central African Republic will receive €500,000 to support case management, vaccination campaigns, and water, sanitation, and hygiene programs. The aid will also bolster surveillance activities, case detection, and community involvement. It will facilitate safe and dignified burials where necessary during the outbreak response. WHO data indicates 386 cholera cases and 31 deaths in the country through June 28. The European Commission emphasized that this assistance is part of its emergency humanitarian response to the outbreaks affecting these four nations.

Cameroon is allocated €100,000 to strengthen outbreak containment and patient care in affected villages. This funding will cover additional humanitarian staff, essential medicines, cholera treatment units, and oral rehydration points. WHO reports 108 cases and six deaths in Cameroon as of June 28. Chad will benefit from €200,000 dedicated to water, sanitation, and hygiene activities, along with community surveillance and case management support. Chad’s reported cases totaled 109, with three deaths during the same period.

Rise in Cases Driven by Nigeria Elevates Regional Statistics

WHO indicated that in June, the African Region saw 27,954 new cholera cases across 12 countries, representing a 95% increase compared to May. The same period recorded 284 cholera-related deaths. Nigeria reported the highest number of new cases, followed by the Democratic Republic of the Congo and South Sudan. WHO attributed the surge in Nigeria to the spike in cases within Borno State, where ongoing conflict, displacement, poor sanitation, and rainfall have heightened transmission risks.

Cholera is an acute diarrheal disease caused by ingesting food or water contaminated with Vibrio cholerae bacteria. Severe cases can cause rapid dehydration, necessitating urgent treatment. The EU’s funding will support efforts aimed at halting transmission and enhancing healthcare access in affected zones. The total aid package for the four countries amounts to €2.3 million, with a focus on expanding treatment capacities, improving surveillance, conducting vaccinations where appropriate, providing safer water supplies, and strengthening sanitation and community engagement during the ongoing outbreak response.
