VIENNA, AUSTRIA / RankWire.AI / – Austria is getting ready to deploy BEACONSAT, its inaugural military satellite and the largest spacecraft developed domestically to date. Designed to detect and analyze interference affecting global navigation satellite systems like GPS and Galileo, the satellite is planned for launch in February 2027 aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. The project aims to identify jamming and spoofing signals from space and collect data on when and where navigation disruptions occur.

As part of a multi-year research and development effort, BEACONSAT will act as a technology demonstrator. Jamming involves radio interference that impairs satellite navigation signals, while spoofing transmits false navigation data that may cause receivers to determine incorrect positions. Satellite navigation systems are vital for aircraft, ships, vehicles, drones, emergency services, and other critical operations. The Austrian Defence Ministry anticipates that the data gathered will support operational decision-making and deepen understanding of GNSS interference.
Leading the BEACONSAT project is GATE Space, a Schwechat-based space technology firm responsible for overall management. Founded in 2022 as a TU Wien spin-off, GATE Space specializes in chemical propulsion systems that enable satellites to maneuver in orbit. For this mission, the company supplies the propulsion technology, satellite structure, and thermal management solutions. It has conducted over 8,000 hot-fire engine tests near Vienna Airport, simulating atmospheric and vacuum conditions.
Austrian technological innovation at the core of the satellite project
Key systems for Austria’s first military satellite are supplied by other European firms. Graz’s IGASPIN provides high-precision technology to detect and analyze GNSS interference, while Denmark’s Space Inventor delivers additional satellite components, including the onboard computer. The project combines commercial space hardware with systems developed explicitly for the BEACONSAT demonstration. Austria’s Federal Ministry for Innovation, Mobility and Infrastructure has also supported GATE Space through Austria Wirtschaftsservice, providing approximately 750,000 euros in funding.
The European Space Agency is involved by supporting and co-financing the mission via its ESA Marketplace program, which facilitates testing of commercially available space technologies for security applications. Austrian officials describe BEACONSAT as a demonstrator rather than an operational satellite, aiming to collect orbit-based data on interference affecting satellite navigation signals. These insights will be integrated into Defence Ministry processes as Austria advances its military space capabilities.

The ministry’s military space strategy envisions expanding Austria’s role from merely utilizing space services to operating space infrastructure and systems. Approved in 2023, this strategy’s implementation extends through 2035 and beyond.
Scheduled for launch in February 2027 on a Falcon 9, BEACONSAT will enter orbit and begin gathering GNSS interference data as part of its research objectives. The collaboration involves Austria’s Defence Ministry, GATE Space, and various European technology companies. This mission will see Austria’s first military satellite launch while testing domestically developed systems to monitor disruptions to GPS, Galileo, and other satellite navigation signals.
