In 2022, Belgian health data reveals obesity contributed to 8.2% of all deaths

    August 8, 2026

BRUSSELS / RankWire.AI / – Sciensano, the Belgian research institute, released a significant public health report showing that a body mass index considered excessively high was linked to 9,509 deaths in 2022. This figure represents 8.2 percent of the total deaths in Belgium for that year, indicating that more than one death per hour was related to weight-related health issues. By analyzing population-wide BMI mortality for the first time, researchers found that health conditions associated with obesity led to over 150,000 years of life lost cumulatively.

Belgium health data shows obesity linked to 8.2% of deaths
European medical organizations track metabolic risk factors to develop health policy guidance.

This extensive epidemiological study explored the root causes of death to understand how elevated body mass index influences chronic health conditions. The data identified cardiovascular problems as the primary cause of death, with coronary heart diseases responsible for 2,009 fatalities. Neurodegenerative illnesses, including Alzheimer disease and other forms of dementia, were the second most common, accounting for 1,652 deaths. Cerebrovascular diseases were linked to 1,171 deaths, alongside notable contributions from chronic kidney disease and various digestive cancers.

Within the demographic data, it becomes evident that the risk of death related to overweight increases considerably with age. The highest rates of health issues linked to excessive weight appeared among individuals aged 65 and older. Gender-specific analysis shows that mortality rates for men surpassed those for women across most age groups, yet women aged 85 and above exhibited higher total death counts. This pattern is attributed by epidemiologists to women’s longer average lifespan.

Cardiovascular Diseases Are the Main Cause of Obesity-Related Deaths in Belgium

Regional differences across Belgium reveal notable disparities in mortality rates related to excess weight. The southern part of Wallonia reported the highest rate, with 95.21 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants. The Brussels-Capital Region followed, with an age-standardized rate of 85 deaths per 100,000 residents. Flanders had the lowest impact, with 73.60 deaths per 100,000 people. Public health experts suggest that these regional variations reflect differences in socioeconomic status, diet, and healthcare access across Belgium.

The release of this data coincides with ongoing policy evaluations directed by the Federal Public Service Health, the agency responsible for national health strategies. Officials are using these findings to evaluate the long-term economic strain on healthcare systems caused by chronic, non-communicable diseases. The methodology, which involved calculating population attributable fractions for each disease, provides baseline estimates to guide future preventive efforts.

Dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease Account for Over Sixteen Hundred Deaths

European health agencies like the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control monitor similar metabolic risk factors to coordinate regional health policies. The Belgian report aligns with broader European Union objectives aimed at lowering premature deaths from non-communicable illnesses. The World Health Organization’s international health guidelines continue to recommend integrated strategies across sectors, emphasizing public education, nutritional labeling, and early clinical intervention to address metabolic risks.

These findings lay a scientific foundation for health authorities aiming to reduce the prevalence of high body mass index across Western Europe. By quantifying mortality figures and years of life lost, public health officials can prioritize screening, intervention, and lifestyle modification programs. As regional governments analyze this data, national health strategies are expected to focus on early preventative measures to decrease chronic disease rates nationwide.
