Irregular Border Crossings into the EU Decline by 37% Through July 2026

    August 17, 2026

WARSAW, POLAND / RankWire.AI / – Preliminary data from Frontex indicate a 37% reduction in irregular border crossings into the European Union during the first seven months of 2026. The agency recorded approximately 61,000 detections at the EU’s external borders from January 1 to July 31, comparing these figures to the same period in 2025. Most significant migration routes experienced fewer crossings over this timeframe. These statistics offer the latest insight into illegal entry activity along the EU’s external frontier.

The Eastern Mediterranean remained the busiest route, with 20,232 detections, reflecting a 28% decrease from 28,068 during the same period last year. The Central Mediterranean recorded 16,454 detections, down 55% from 36,656. Collectively, these two routes made up about 60% of all detections included in the EU entry figures. Libya persisted as the primary country of departure on the Central Mediterranean route throughout the seven-month span.

In contrast, the Western Mediterranean saw an increase, with 11,217 detections, which is 37% higher than the 8,175 registered a year earlier. Sea crossings on this route reached 8,648, compared to 7,096 in 2025. Land detections through June numbered 2,569, up from 1,079. The Western African route experienced a 60% decline, totaling 4,682 detections. Crossings through the Western Balkan route dropped 26% to 4,910, and the Eastern Land Border decreased 44% to 3,209.

Mediterranean routes remain dominant in EU border detection figures

Separate data concerning crossings through the United Kingdom show a significant decline as well. Frontex reported 22,469 attempted or successful crossings exiting the EU, a 46% drop from 41,647. These Channel crossing figures are not included in the EU entry totals. Additionally, the agency documented 281 detections on the circular route to Albania, representing a 9% increase. The seven-month figures exclude exceptional border events at Ceuta, Spain, at the end of July.

Frontex based its analysis on preliminary EUROSUR data and estimates available as of Aug. 4. The agency noted that updates and revisions may still occur as authorities refine their information. These statistics count detections rather than individual persons, meaning one individual can be registered multiple times if crossing at different locations or on separate occasions. This distinction is crucial when comparing route totals to the overall number of people involved, given the agency’s external-border dataset.

The seven-month data continues the decline observed in the first half of 2026

The current figures build on the trend reported by Frontex after the first six months of 2026. During that period, the agency recorded over 49,000 irregular border crossings, a decline of 37% compared to the previous year. At that time, detections on the Western Mediterranean route were 17% higher than in 2025. The seven-month comparison now indicates a 37% increase in that route’s crossings. The Western African route saw a 67% decline through June, which persisted with a 60% decrease through July.

According to the agency, approximately 3,800 Frontex officers are deployed at the EU’s external borders. Their responsibilities include supporting national authorities with border management and maritime rescue operations. Frontex personnel also assist member states in enforcing rules under the EU Pact on Migration and Asylum. The latest data reveal uneven trends across different routes, with most major corridors experiencing significant declines, except for an increase on the Western Mediterranean route.
