Support from the EU Expands to Combat Wildfires Across Europe Amid Growing Crisis in 2026

    August 18, 2026

BRUSSELS, BELGIUM / RankWire.AI / – As wildfires intensify across Europe, the European Union has deployed aircraft, helicopters, ground crews, and satellite mapping technology to assist overwhelmed emergency services. Both Belgium and Spain requested aid through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism as fires spread across multiple regions. These latest deployments introduce cross-border resources to support national firefighting efforts during the severe 2026 fire season. By the end of July, Europe’s burned area was approximately 2.5 times larger than typical for that period. This aid comes in response to separate national requests rather than a continent-wide emergency activation.

EU expands wildfire response across Europe with support
European countries expand joint wildfire response as fires strain emergency services.

In Belgium, Sweden dispatched two rescEU firefighting planes to support crews fighting the Hautes Fagnes wildfire. Germany and Norway each sent two helicopters, and Dutch aerial support also participated in the operation. EU officials confirmed that two Dutch helicopters were dispatched, while Walloon authorities listed one Dutch helicopter among active resources late Monday. The latest EU assessment indicated over 3,000 hectares had been consumed in the Belgian fire zone. Emergency crews from roughly 20 different zones also remained on the ground in Belgium.

By Monday evening, nearly 500 personnel and over 120 vehicles were actively involved in Belgium’s firefighting efforts, according to Walloon authorities. Ground teams operated in accessible terrain, with farmers assisting by providing water to firefighting units. The fire remained contained in sectors where emergency crews could access, although flames advanced overnight into areas unreachable on foot. Residents of Sourbrodt were allowed to return home Monday night, while some residents of Küchelscheid still could not. Authorities maintained road and reservoir closures to ensure emergency access and safety.

Cross-Border Crews Bolster Spain’s Firefighting Efforts

In Spain, France contributed 104 ground firefighters and 36 vehicles to support firefighting teams in Aragón. When the European deployment was announced, nearly 16,000 hectares had already been burned in the region. The forestry authority in Aragón issued 14 fire danger zones under red alert for August 18, up from eight zones on Monday. The official bulletin reported very high or fully available dead fuels across central and northern parts of the region. French teams joined Spanish firefighters already operating in the affected area.

Satellite mapping technology is assisting emergency services in Belgium, Spain, Greece, Germany, Montenegro, Serbia, Albania, France, and Italy. The Copernicus Emergency Management Service is producing rapid maps, enabling authorities to evaluate burned areas and coordinate field operations. These geospatial maps are crucial during active wildfire emergencies, providing detailed terrain information. The European Commission also manages cross-border aid offers and helps finance transportation and operational costs linked to deployments. The satellite system supplies vital geospatial data to aid response planning during natural disasters.

European Union Mobilizes Resources Across Multiple Fire Zones

The civil protection system allows nations affected by wildfires to request assistance when their own resources are stretched thin. The Emergency Response Coordination Centre handles these requests, matches them with available offers, and supports the deployment of personnel and equipment. As the 2026 wildfire season begins, Europe has in its joint fleet 22 firefighting aircraft and five helicopters. Additionally, authorities have prepositioned 777 firefighters from 14 countries across Cyprus, Greece, Italy, France, Spain, and Portugal. These reserve resources are ready for deployment during major emergencies.

In Belgium, the response integrates aircraft, helicopters, ground teams, drones, and local logistics under coordinated emergency operations. In Spain, reinforcements from France increased personnel and vehicle numbers for a large regional firefighting effort. Across Europe, satellite mapping supports national agencies managing multiple independent wildfire incidents. The Civil Protection Mechanism activates international assistance once countries submit requests through the European coordination system. Both Belgium and Spain have utilized this process during the ongoing wave of wildfires in Europe.
