The milestone for July followed a June characterized by widespread and persistent extreme heat. According to GeoSphere Austria, 157 out of its 277 monitored weather stations recorded new maximums for June. Additionally, 66 stations reported their highest temperature for any month. On June 28, Vienna reached 40.0 degrees, while Bad Deutsch-Altenburg hit 40.1 degrees the next day. Several low-lying areas experienced 10 to 14 consecutive days with temperatures exceeding 30 degrees.
The Wegener Center at the University of Graz estimated that the combined socioeconomic damages from the June and late July heatwaves amount to roughly €1.4 billion. This preliminary estimate considers health impacts, lost productivity, agricultural damage, infrastructure stress, and increased cooling demand. It also factors in effects on ecosystems and public services. This figure is not the final government assessment nor does it encompass insured losses, as insurance data only reflects damage covered by active policies.
Heatwave intensity exceeds previous Austrian events
The Wegener Center assessed the heatwaves via area-degree days, which combine measures of heat intensity, duration, and geographic coverage. Their calculations suggest about 16,700 area-degree days for the June event. For the late July heatwave, estimates range from 22,700 to 25,000. Austria’s prior record was set during a 24-day heatwave in July and August 2013, which totaled approximately 22,100 area-degree days across regions below 1,500 meters elevation.
The extreme temperatures also corresponded with a notable rise in heat-related fatalities. The Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety estimated that 395 deaths in June 2026 were linked to heat. This represents the highest June total since the agency started tracking such data. Heat-associated mortality indicates deaths occurring above the expected baseline during periods of intense heat, without necessarily requiring heat to be listed as the direct cause on death certificates.
National drought worsens due to rainfall shortfall
Following several months of unusually dry conditions, Austria endured the heatwave amid a significant lack of rainfall. Between January 1 and July 27, the country received approximately 426 millimeters of precipitation, well below the long-term average of 609 millimeters for that period, resulting in nearly a 30% shortfall. Authorities described the first seven months of 2026 as the driest comparable period since at least the early 1900s. Regions such as Lower Austria, Vienna, and northern Burgenland reported some of the most substantial rainfall deficits.
Persistent high-pressure systems, intense sunshine, and minimal precipitation amplified evaporation rates during late spring and summer, leading to reduced soil moisture and additional strain on crops, rivers, forests, and water supplies. Austrian climate records reveal an increase in the frequency, duration, and intensity of heatwaves over recent decades. Average maximum temperatures during these events have risen by approximately three degrees from the 1980s through the 2020s. The recent July record adds yet another marker to Austria’s ongoing trend of rising extreme heat levels.
