Italian towns enforce mandatory online booking for popular beaches

    July 21, 2026

ROME, ITALY/ EuroWire / — In an effort to curb escalating environmental degradation caused by overtourism, tourists pay fees book slots to visit popular Italian beaches across multiple coastal provinces this summer. Municipalities across Sardinia, Liguria, and Puglia have established mandatory digital booking platforms, enforcing strict daily access limits to preserve delicate shoreline habitats.  Data published by the Italian National Institute of Statistics confirms that tourist arrivals grew four point two percent in early two thousand twenty six, creating unsustainable ecological pressures on vulnerable marine ecosystems.

Mediterranean coastal regions balance natural conservation goals with global tourist visits

Under updated municipal decrees, tourists face firm attendance ceilings and timed reservation windows at high-demand coastal locations. Across Sardinia, local councils implemented daily visitor caps ranging from sixty to three thousand three hundred fifty-two people depending on environmental vulnerability. At La Pelosa beach in Stintino, daily entries are capped strictly at one thousand five hundred bathers through October. Access requires an online reservation, a three euro and fifty cent fee, and digital mobile verification at physical checkpoints. Local administrative officials confirmed that available booking slots for La Pelosa have already sold out completely through mid-September.

Environmental advocacy organizations have expressed strong support for digital pass requirements to prevent severe coastal erosion. Spokespersons for Legambiente noted that unmanaged foot traffic strips tons of sand annually and destroys delicate dune flora. At La Pelosa, environmental wardens determined that bathers unintentionally remove massive amounts of sand stuck to wet towels. Consequently, authorities enforced a compulsory straw mat requirement under towels, penalizing violators with one hundred euro fines. Furthermore, statutory fines for removing natural sand, shells, or pebbles range between five hundred and three thousand five hundred euros.

Digital registration platforms streamline coastal crowd management

In eastern Sardinia, similar digital access systems regulate access to world-famous natural monuments and coastal coves. The Baunei municipality maintains a daily cap of two hundred fifty visitors for the UNESCO-protected cove of Cala Goloritzé. Travelers must book entry up to three days in advance using a specialized smartphone app and pay a seven euro access charge. Controls also operate at neighboring coves, including Su Sirboni, which limits entry to seven hundred eighty-six visitors daily, and Cala Brandinchi, capped at one thousand four hundred forty-seven. Local wardens conduct verification using handheld digital QR scanners at trail entrances and boat landings.

Mainland destinations outside island territories have implemented identical booking protocols to prevent dangerous overcrowding during summer months. In the Ligurian municipality of Sestri Levante, authorities established a daily limit of four hundred fifty visitors for the Baia del Silenzio. While entry remains free, tourists must complete an online reservation during peak operational hours. Simultaneously, regional tourism departments have aligned their operational rules with directives issued by the Ministry of Tourism. Authorities strive to balance open public access with mandatory ecological preservation across all coastal jurisdictions.

UNESCO protected coves restrict daily capacity via mobile apps

The introduction of paid reservation systems has triggered widespread debate among hospitality operators, commercial associations, and travel agencies. While environmentalists deem visitor quotas necessary for long-term survival, private beach concessionaires worry about reduced commercial traffic. Official government metrics show that thirty-three percent of the Italian coastline is leased to private operators managing commercial sunbeds and umbrellas. However, municipal leaders maintained that public shoreline sectors require systematic crowd management to ensure visitor safety, maintain emergency access routes, and preserve pristine environmental resources for future generations.

As digital access management becomes standard across the Mediterranean, administrators expect online booking rules to expand to additional shorelines. As tourists pay fees book slots to visit popular Italian beaches, foreign travelers are advised to book months ahead and verify regional laws before arrival. Official tourist portals now publish live capacity trackers and direct reservation links for public use. The Italian National Tourist Board confirmed that compliance checks will continue through peak season to enforce entry fees, equipment policies, and daily capacity caps.
