The study from the World Weather Attribution group details how rising temperatures are actively depleting natural water reserves. Mariam Zachariah, a researcher at Imperial College London, pointed out that the drought is not mainly caused by low rainfall but by a warmer atmosphere creating larger moisture deficits on the land. This dynamic means the risk of drought will keep increasing even in areas where rainfall patterns stay relatively stable. Scientists note that a warmer atmosphere can hold approximately seven percent more water vapor for each one degree Celsius increase in temperature. This additional capacity directly boosts evaporation rates from soil and vegetation across the entire landscape.
Using extensive weather data and sophisticated computer models, researchers compared today’s hotter climate against a scenario that was 1.4 degrees Celsius cooler to estimate changes in the likelihood of such weather events. The results revealed that soils in western Europe are now five times more prone to extreme dryness than they would be in a world without human-induced warming. In eastern Europe, these soil moisture deficits are 11 times more likely. Additionally, the analysis showed that the extremely high evaporative demand observed between April and June in western Europe was about 80 times more probable. Consequently, rainfall shortages that once would not have caused severe drought now produce much drier soils.

Dominik Schumacher, a scientist from ETH Zurich, highlighted the increased tendency for unusual soil drying already evident in spring before summer’s arrival. He explained that as temperatures rise, the atmosphere’s thirst intensifies rapidly, extracting vital moisture from rivers, lakes, reservoirs, and soils. The combination of a relatively wet start to the year followed by extreme heat created ideal conditions for large wildfires. The rapid drying of land contributed to severe fires across multiple nations, as the land became primed for ignition. Many countries are already enforcing emergency restrictions or temporary bans on non-essential water use to conserve dwindling supplies.
Scientists warn that if global temperatures continue to rise, these drought conditions could become even more frequent. Experts emphasize that such intense evaporative conditions are occurring at 1.4 degrees Celsius of warming, underscoring the immediate danger posed by current emission levels. If global temperatures reach 2.8 degrees Celsius as projected, the likelihood of these evaporative conditions could double.
