On August 10, Nearly 260,000 Displaced by Wildfires Near Bordeaux and Madrid

    July 27, 2026

Bordeaux, France / EuroWire / – The massive wildfires raging across southwestern France and the Iberian Peninsula have led to the evacuation of roughly 260,000 residents and tourists from key holiday destinations. Driven by successive heatwaves, dry conditions, and unpredictable wind changes, these fires have spread through coastal areas near Bordeaux and rural zones west of Madrid. Both French and Spanish emergency agencies have declared emergency levels as thick smoke clouds disrupted major regional transportation systems, resulting in the closure of several resort centers. Local authorities confirmed that prolonged high temperatures created extreme fire hazards, prompting widespread civilian evacuation orders to protect public safety.

In France, officials issued mass evacuations across the Gironde department after flames advanced toward popular seaside communities along the Atlantic coast. French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez stated that approximately 200,000 people were moved into temporary shelters, describing the operation as possibly the largest civilian evacuation in peacetime in France’s history. To assist, the French Armed Forces deployed 1,500 personnel to support emergency crews on the ground. Additionally, military aircraft, including an Airbus A400M Atlas, equipped with specialized water dropping tools, were used to combat fires in remote forested areas.

Regional authorities in southwestern France ordered an organized, step-by-step evacuation of the entire Cap Ferret peninsula, as fires consumed thousands of hectares of coastal pine forests. The Prefecture of Gironde confirmed that emergency responders established temporary reception centers inside exhibition halls in Bordeaux to accommodate arriving families. Assistance was provided through medical aid, temporary housing, and protective masks for those affected by the heavy smoke drifting from the fire zones. Firefighting teams received reinforcement units from the Paris Fire Brigade, along with aerial firefighting resources supplied by European partner nations, to meet the demands of the spreading blazes.

In Spain, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez visited sectors affected by the fires west of Madrid, where multiple blazes had combined into a single large wildfire. Spanish Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska confirmed that more than 60,000 residents and visitors were evacuated from towns within the Madrid region. Emergency agencies from Spain deployed specialized units from the Military Emergencies Unit to establish defensive lines around vulnerable communities. Meanwhile, in eastern Spain, authorities reported one fatality near Valencia after a wildfire spread through rural farmland, leading to additional evacuations in the area.

Deployment of Military Assets and Aerial Firefighting Support

Relief efforts intensified through the European Civil Protection Mechanism as both France and Spain requested specialized aerial firefighting aid. Aircraft supplied by Italy, Greece, Portugal, and the Netherlands arrived to conduct water drops over high-risk zones in Spain. Simultaneously, France received support from Croatia, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic, including heavy lift helicopters and aircraft. The European Forest Fire Information System reported that total burned areas across EU member states reached historic levels during this summer season.

Nearly 260,000 people have been forced to evacuate near major tourist spots in France and Spain amidst the peak summer travel season in the northern hemisphere, causing disruptions in regional rail and road traffic. International travel advisories updated by foreign diplomatic services urged travelers in France and Spain to monitor local news and follow municipal safety instructions strictly. Tourist boards in affected coastal areas have seen significant cancellations as authorities restricted access to forested parks and mountain trails. Emergency teams continue establishing secondary containment lines and monitoring weather forecasts for potential wind shifts that could exacerbate fire conditions.

Heavy Lift Aircraft Support Firefighting Operations

Emergency management teams in both nations are maintaining 24/7 monitoring while firefighting crews work to protect vital infrastructure and residential areas. Major cities like Madrid and Bordeaux’s public health departments issued air quality alerts, advising vulnerable populations to stay indoors with windows closed due to high levels of atmospheric ash. Municipal logistics teams continue distributing emergency supplies, drinking water, and hygiene kits to those displaced within temporary shelters. Authorities reaffirm that containment efforts will persist across all sectors until weather conditions stabilize and fire perimeters are fully secured.
