UK aligns with allies on 2026 do not travel warnings

    January 21, 2026

EuroWire, LONDON: The United Kingdom has updated and reiterated travel guidance that aligns with warnings issued by Canada, the United States, Australia and New Zealand, urging travelers to avoid high risk destinations and to follow official advice closely as governments refresh global safety assessments for 2026. The advisories cite risks including violent crime, kidnapping, terrorism, civil unrest, arbitrary detention and limited consular capacity, with guidance varying by country and, in some cases, by region.

UK aligns with allies on 2026 do not travel warnings
UK and allied governments refresh 2026 travel advisories urging caution and avoidance worldwide.

The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, which issues country by country travel advice, says travel insurance can be invalidated when trips are taken against official guidance and notes that support may be restricted during fast moving crises. Its pages for multiple destinations emphasize that conditions can change quickly, and recommend travelers sign up for alerts and review local laws, security conditions and entry requirements before departure.

Mexico remains a major focus across several governments’ advisories, with risk assessments often broken down by state. The UK advises against all but essential travel to specific areas, including parts of Baja California, Tamaulipas, Zacatecas, Michoacan and Jalisco, among others, reflecting concerns tied to security conditions and organized crime. Canada also flags several Mexican states under regional “avoid non essential travel” guidance, while Australia advises a high degree of caution nationwide and recommends reconsidering travel to some states.

For Belarus and Venezuela, the UK’s position is more sweeping. The UK advises against all travel to Belarus, warning of the risk of arrest and the broader security environment linked to the war in neighboring Ukraine. The UK also continues to advise against all travel to Venezuela, with its latest update in early January reiterating the warning and emphasizing insurance implications and the difficulty of obtaining help in an emergency.

Coordinated warnings across multiple risk categories

Iraq continues to appear among destinations where governments urge travelers to avoid travel or to restrict it to essential reasons, citing the volatile security environment and the threat of attacks. The UK advises against all travel to parts of Iraq and against all but essential travel to other areas, including guidance that differentiates the Kurdistan Region from border zones and other local risk areas. Canada’s guidance for Iraq is “avoid all travel,” and New Zealand advises against travel to Iraq, including the Kurdistan region.

Ethiopia is also listed with significant cautions that are often region specific. The UK advises against all travel to parts of Ethiopia and against all but essential travel to other areas, with regional risk guidance that includes sections of Tigray and other locations where security conditions have been unstable. Canada advises avoiding non essential travel to Ethiopia overall, while noting that advice can vary by location and that consular support may be limited in some regions.

Algeria illustrates how advisories can combine national level caution with strict restrictions for specific border areas. The UK advises against all travel within set distances of several borders, including areas near Libya, Mauritania, Mali, Niger and parts of the Tunisia border region, and advises against all but essential travel to additional stretches along the Tunisia frontier. Canada similarly advises a high degree of caution in Algeria while listing border zones where it advises against travel due to security risks.

How to read 2026 travel advisories before booking

Officials across the five governments emphasize that advisory systems use different labels but serve a similar purpose, to communicate risk levels and the limits of consular assistance. The United States uses a four tier system, and its Mexico guidance is structured state by state, while Canada and Australia commonly pair national guidance with regional exceptions. New Zealand’s SafeTravel advisories also highlight where travel is not recommended and what precautions are expected if travelers proceed.

Travelers planning 2026 itineraries are advised to check the latest official country page shortly before booking and again before departure, since advisory dates and regional maps can change without notice. Governments also recommend confirming whether insurance remains valid, registering with national alert systems where available, keeping contingency funds and documents accessible, and avoiding high risk areas identified in regional guidance even when travel to the country is not fully discouraged.
