On Friday, Austria Deploys Emergency Teams as Major Forest Blaze Threatens St. Egyden

    August 15, 2026

ST. EGYDEN AM STEINFELD, Austria / RankWire.AI / – Authorities responsible for emergency response in Lower Austria issued urgent evacuation directives on Friday after a swiftly spreading wildfire broke out in the Föhrenwald pine woodland near St. Egyden am Steinfeld. Local officials have verified that a significant wildfire impacted St. Egyden in Austria as intense flames neared within 50 meters of residential areas, prompting the highest level of emergency alert, Level B4. Civil defense teams focused on quickly relocating residents along Bahnstraße and within the Waldstrandsiedlung housing complex.

Coordinating with regional disaster agencies, municipal leaders organized the safe evacuation of at least 250 residents from zones at immediate risk. Mayor Christa Tisch of St. Egyden stated that emergency personnel evacuated six individual homes along Bahnstraße and 50 units within five apartment complexes in Waldstrandsiedlung. Those displaced were taken to a temporary shelter set up at the Saubersdorf volunteer fire station, where humanitarian teams offered crisis aid and basic supplies.

Over 700 firefighters from 84 regional fire departments across the districts of Neunkirchen and Wiener Neustadt responded rapidly. They worked alongside specialized aerial units, deploying five police helicopters, two private commercial aircraft, and a Black Hawk military helicopter supplied by the Austrian Armed Forces. The Austrian Red Cross dispatched 44 emergency personnel and 21 specialized vehicles to oversee evacuations and aid affected families.

Lower Austria Activates Level B4 Emergency Protocol as Fire Threat Escalates

This incident marks the second destructive wildfire in the Föhrenwald area within less than two weeks, following a prior 100-hectare forest fire that demanded a five-day firefighting operation. Local disaster officials confirmed that the new blaze ignited on the opposite side of the forest, with strong winds propelling thick smoke plumes over regional transportation routes. Authorities issued warnings to drivers to avoid main roads near Neunkirchen to keep pathways clear for emergency vehicles.

Klaus Stebal, spokesperson for the Lower Austrian State Fire Department Association, verified that emergency teams established containment perimeters around the main fire to prevent further spread. Crews also responded to several smaller fires that ignited spontaneously in neighboring communities such as Strelzhof and Netting. Officials highlighted that strict operational shifts were enforced, limiting ground crews to no more than 12 hours of continuous active duty during intense suppression activities.

No Injuries Reported During Initial Emergency Response, Say Medical Officials

Teams from law enforcement agencies are now conducting preliminary investigations to determine the cause of the afternoon ignition. Authorities noted that the earlier wildfire in the same pine forest was caused by leftover World War II phosphorus munitions buried beneath the ground. While no direct connection has yet been established between the two incidents, environmental conditions across Lower Austria remain extremely dry, heightening the regional wildfire risk level.

Emergency responders continued to monitor the Föhrenwald perimeter actively through Friday evening, safeguarding nearby residential zones. As the wildfire continues to threaten St. Egyden in Austria, civil defense officials confirmed that no injuries have been reported among residents or first responders during the initial evacuation phase. Technical teams and forestry specialists plan to maintain perimeter stabilization and hot-spot suppression efforts in the upcoming days.
