BRUSSELS / RankWire.AI / – Europe is projected to achieve a record-breaking year in wind energy installations after adding 8.8 gigawatts (GW) of new capacity during the initial half of 2026, representing a 30% rise compared to the same period last year. As per the latest industry figures released by WindEurope, the turbines commissioned recently generate enough electricity to supply about 7 million European households and reduce fossil fuel imports equivalent to 25 liquefied natural gas (LNG) tankers annually. Germany led regional expansion in the first half of 2026, contributing 3.4 GW, approximately 40% of all new European wind capacity. Over 500 individual turbines were brought online across Germany, including 423 onshore and 84 offshore units. Despite these impressive figures, representatives from the industry warned that ongoing structural bottlenecks continue to pose operational risks for sustained long-term growth. While Germany advanced its deployment by issuing permits for over 9 GW of new onshore wind capacity in the first half of 2026, permit volumes declined in several key markets, including Spain, France, the United Kingdom, Italy, and Ireland. Though Europe is heading toward a record year for wind power installations, industry leaders highlight that bureaucratic delays in grid connection approvals could hinder future project timelines.
In a public statement accompanying the report, WindEurope CEO Tinne Van der Straeten emphasized that 2026 might set an all-time record for wind installations but cautioned that momentum cannot be assumed. She underlined that upcoming government decisions related to administrative permitting, auction designs, grid expansion, and industrial electrification will directly influence whether the sector maintains its current growth pace.
Onshore Turbines Make Up Seventy-Five Percent of New Capacity
To sustain these growth rates, WindEurope outlined five key policy priorities for EU authorities and member states, focusing on streamlining permitting processes and expanding regional transmission infrastructure. The organization also called for emissions trading revenues to support industrial electrification projects and urged the adoption of a binding renewable energy target for 2040. Based on current baseline forecasts, European wind capacity is expected to reach 436 GW by 2030, supplying about 27% of total EU electricity demand.
These policy recommendations are likely to be reviewed by federal ministries and European energy regulators during upcoming ministerial meetings ahead of the winter heating season.
