US Issues New Belgium Travel Advisory Update Amid Ongoing Crime and Unrest Concerns on July 23

    August 6, 2026

BRUSSELS, BELGIUM / RankWire.AI / – The U.S. State Department has revised its travel advisory for Belgium, advising Americans to exercise heightened caution due to issues related to crime, terrorism, and unrest. Issued on July 23, the notice maintains Belgium at Level 2 on the department’s four-tier scale. Authorities have added crime and civil disturbance to the list of risks and have updated the summary accordingly. This update does not recommend that travelers avoid Belgium entirely. Level 2 encourages visitors to exercise extra vigilance and review official safety instructions before traveling.

US updates Belgium travel advisory over crime and unrest
Belgium remains at Level 2 under updated US travel guidance on crime and unrest.

According to the advisory, petty crimes are frequent in popular tourist spots. Purse snatching and pickpocketing are common offenses targeting foreign tourists. The State Department also warns about incidents of robberies, theft of electronics, and items stolen from vehicles. It points out key locations such as major cities, restaurants, train stations, buses, trams, and the Brussels metro at night as areas requiring caution. Travelers are advised to keep valuables close, carry minimal cash and IDs, and remain alert in crowded settings.

The advisory emphasizes a rise in bag thefts on trains, especially on the route between Brussels and Amsterdam. Thieves often target lightweight bags stored on overhead racks. Passengers are advised to keep cash, passports, and valuables within reach, and drivers are warned to lock vehicle doors, close windows, and avoid leaving belongings visible inside parked cars. Belgian Federal Police highlight that thieves frequently work in teams, using crowds, bumps, or staged distractions to steal wallets, phones, and travel bags.

Increased focus on Crime and Transportation Dangers

The terrorism section notes that violent attacks and related activities continue to pose a threat in Belgium. It highlights public events, hotels, restaurants, places of worship, schools, parks, shopping districts, and transportation hubs as potential targets. The guidance underscores that terrorists and their supporters may aim at U.S. citizens abroad. Belgium’s Coordination Unit for Threat Analysis currently assesses the national threat level at Level 3, which they describe as serious. On its four-point scale, officials consider a Level 3 threat as possible and likely.

The updated advisory also draws attention to demonstrations and strikes. Large gatherings are usually peaceful but can disrupt transport and essential services. The State Department states protests may occur over political or economic issues, during major holidays, or big events. Police routinely monitor demonstrations, and travelers are advised to avoid large crowds. It’s recommended that visitors check local updates, monitor traffic alerts, and modify plans if public transportation faces delays or closures.

Travel Preparedness and Vigilance Recommended for Visitors

U.S. officials suggest enrolling in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program, known as STEP, before or during a visit. This service provides alerts from the U.S. Embassy in Brussels and helps officials contact travelers during emergencies. Americans are also advised to review Belgium’s entry requirements, local laws, and health guidelines. U.S. tourists can stay up to 90 days without a visa, and passports must be valid for at least three months beyond the intended departure date from the Schengen zone.

Travelers are encouraged to stay alert in tourist areas and around banks or ATMs. It is recommended to stay informed through local updates and know how to contact emergency services. Belgium’s emergency number 112 is for life-threatening situations across Europe, while 101 is for police assistance within Belgium. The U.S. Embassy in Brussels offers consular support to American citizens. The July update maintains the advisory at the same level but emphasizes the risks related to crime and unrest for those visiting Belgium.
